Deborah Shields

Deborah Shields has a MSc in mineral economics from the Colorado School of Mines and a PhD in natural resource management from Colorado State University. She is currently Affiliated Faculty (Full Professor) in the Department of Economics at Colorado State and a Visiting Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics at the Politecnico de Torino in Italy. She is also a member of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations Task Group on Mining and Sustainable Development. Deborah was previously the Principal Mineral Economist for the U.S. Forest Service, Research and Development Division, where she directed the agency's mineral policy research program.

Deborah's research focus is on mineral policy, resource and land management, and minerals in sustainable development. She has authored more than 70 peer reviewed publications, has lead, worked on, or been a consultant to EU, US, and NATO funded projects, co-organized and taught workshops and short courses, and presented at numerous international conferences.
